A small incident in the school, of parrot being attacked by a bunch of crows, sensitized Nisha Subramanian, towards animal. That is when she decided with her brother Sunish Subramanian that both would work in the field of animal welfare. Since then, it was no looking back by this brother sister duo. For the love of animals and flora and fauna, this Subramanian sibling started an NGO Plants & Animals Welfare Society, Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai).
With more than 15 years of experience in animal rights and working for environment conservation, Nisha has surely transformed her love for the environment in a successful career.
Being administrator and treasurer for PAWS-Mumbai, Nisha has also won many accolades in her career.
Talking about her work, Nisha said, “Our NGO rescues birds and animals trapped in residential areas and rescue them to natural habitat or sanctuary.”
She added, “Apart from this, we also regularly inspect zoos and markets that sell birds if any protected species are sold in the markets. We have raided the markets many times and found star turtles and parrots being sold unethically.”
Nisha also works for vaccination of the stray dogs and her NGO gives a prompt response if anyone contacts them for any bird or animal rescue.
She also believes in taking ahead this career to the school students for which her NGO regularly organizes awareness programs for the students.
Giving further details regarding the awareness program she said, “We conduct such awareness programs in school wherein we sensitize students towards animals and environments. We also introduce them to the different species of animals and birds which are protected and how we should curb any unethical practices against them.”
In her career, Nisha has received many accolades and appreciations. She has received a special mention award and her name is included in ‘100 women of India Award’ in the category of animal welfare by Government of India, ministry of women & Child Development. She has also received global award Karmaveer Chakra and Karmaveer Puraskar from iCONGO.
She believes that such accolades in life always motivate her to work more in life and also gives a sense of responsibility.
“I feel responsible as an animal activist and would like to continue this noble work by passing ahead to the younger generation. Also, women are more sensitive and they tend to get scared in any unfortunate incident. Therefore, I would like if more and more women also come forward and work in this field,” she added.
Nisha, now dreams to start a small clinic for animals where the injured animals, birds can stay till they get recovered.
