Everything moves quickly in the century we live in. Every morning when we wake up, we get the feeling that everything in our world might change at any moment. One thing unites all of the great innovations that we can find when we research their histories: nearly all of them were motivated only by curiosity. One may argue that curiosity is the most ancient kind of learning. During childhood, children are inquisitive and have a lot of questions. We used to ask our parents a lot of "WHYS" when we were little, which usually annoyed them. But because of our educational system, we stopped asking questions as we grew older. Our educational system's inflexible framework leaves little room for innovation and originality. We need to provide students ample time to explore their hobbies to make our educational system more student-friendly.
Nurturing curiosity in children ~
- Encourage them to be unique
Every child should realize that it is great to be unique and special in their way. You need not have to be one among the flock of the same feather that society wishes to see in them.
- Nurture their creativity
Parents should ensure that their talents and creativity are discovered at an early age so that they can reach their full potential as they grow. Explore their creativity and encourage them to help reach their zenith.
- Support their innovations
Whenever your child comes up with something new, be it small or big, support them wholeheartedly. Not everyone will shine in academics but realize that their talents lie elsewhere, explore, and help them succeed.
- Motivate the habit of asking questions
We know how young kids ‘annoy’ us with questions, but be patient and answer them till they are satisfied. This will motivate them to keep on asking questions.
- Generate curiosity in day-to-day activities
From a very young age, involve your child in activities that generate curiosity, like building blocks or story cubes. As they grow, provide them with age-appropriate games and activities that increase their curiosity.
- Appreciate their interests
We as parents might have dreams about our kids but always give priority to their interests. Help them pursue their interests and dreams. Always be that person who will be there, back them up, hold them when they fall, and lift them step by step.
According to Karen Stephens, director of Illinois State University Child Care Centre, “Helping children learn to satisfy curiosity through exploration is one of the best skills you will ever nurture.” So, as parents, let us be the generators, nurturers, and promoters of curiosity within our kids.
