The traffic policemen and Road Safety Officers(RSO) in Gurgaon adopted a novel idea during the Christmas season to teach traffic lessons to the people. They dressed up as Santa Claus and educated people about traffic rules and ways to ensure safe driving on the road.
Under the programme, a "Safety Parade with Santa" a bike rally was conducted and road safety messages were conveyed across the city. Instead of the traditional red hat, the traffic Santa Claus donned helmets to spread awareness about the safety of the bikers.
Later, the traffic Santas flashed placards with the message on road safety and informed those who flouted the traffic rules about how their negligence can even cost a life.
On Christmas Eve, a special drive was conducted against drunken driving where the Santas made over a 100 drivers pledge that they will not drink and drive again. The drive was conducted from 10 pm on Sunday night, till 1 am on Monday. DCP (Traffic) Deepak Gahlawat said that the campaign was about bringing people safely home and educating them the dangers and risks caused by drinking and driving.
Around half a dozen traffic cops who dressed as Santa Clauses, joined by 15 RSOs on Monday covered a distance of 30 kms across Gurgaon spreading awareness. They counseled over a thousand drivers and keeping up with the spirit of the festival, didn't fine anyone for flouting traffic norms.
