Colleges in Bangalore are saving paper and following the digital trend. Students at Manipal university have already given their exams on electronic tablets. Currently, 10,000 students have been given e-tabs for this year's examinations, and 25,000 are expected to get them by the end of 2018.

The university is able to save 30 lakh papers every year due to the digital initiative. Most of the institutes under Manipal University are using tablets for assignments and examinations.

Registrar Dr. Narayana Sabhahit said that tabs were introduced two years ago and the response from students and teachers has been positive. Now, tabs will be introduced for regular curriculum and they will be issued to the students during admission itself.

The tabs designed for examinations have a special surface, providing a writing experience similar to that on paper. The surface reduces glare and students are unable to copy due to the limited viewing angle.

The app interface on the device provides features like redo, undo, cut, copy, rough note. It also gives the option of ruled and unruled pages, which help students write exams effectively. It also has a fingerprint scanner.

Other colleges that have adopted the digital trend are PES University and Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for women.
