Major cities across the United States are experiencing a welcome decline in violent crime and homicide rates, offering hope for a safer future. Notably, Detroit is on track to achieve its lowest crime rate in 60 years, thanks to the implementation of a special task force aimed at addressing a criminal case backlog.

Following the government-enforced lockdowns of the criminal justice system in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, the task force successfully reduced the number of felons awaiting trial from 4,000 to 1,400. This concerted effort, which involved budget increases and allowing judges to work remotely, has yielded positive results. Violent crime rates in the first 11 months of 2023 have seen significant declines compared to 2022, with the homicide rate down by 18% and carjackings down by 36%.

Mayor Mike Duggan attributes the surge in violent crime across America to the closure of criminal courts, making it impossible to convene juries. The program implemented in Detroit has shown promising results in curbing crime.

Similar positive trends are observed in other major cities. Chicago, infamous for its high crime rates, is also experiencing double-digit percentage declines in homicides and shootings. Los Angeles has seen a decrease in violent crimes, including aggravated assault, homicide, shootings, and rape, with reductions ranging from double digits to a quarter.
