A unanimous recommendation passed by the Maharashtra Assembly over the name change of Mumbai’s famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Elphinstone Road station has been finally approved by the Union government.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) will be renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Elphinstone Road will be renamed as Prabhadevi. The state government has received a letter from the Union Home Ministry acknowledging its approval for the same. The state government will now soon issue the notification about the renaming. The renaming ceremonies of the two stations are going to be grand.
As per the state government, the word ‘Maharaj’ must be added to CST to mark respect to great Maratha warrior. Also, the Elphinstone Road station is being renamed in honour of the deity. The state government has also previously managed to rename two stations- Charni Road station as Girgaum and Grant Road station as Jagannath Shankar Seth Road. Also, the addition of the word ‘Maharaj’ to the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) too has been recommended, but the approval is yet to be made.
The change was approved last month itself, though the station’s code of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus will remain CSTM for booking tickets.
