In a remarkable feat that is capturing hearts across India, Aarini Lahoty, a five-year-old girl from Delhi, has become the youngest FIDE-rated female chess player in the country. At just 5 years and 10 months, Aarini’s journey in the chess world is proof of her raw talent, rapid learning, and unwavering dedication.
According to a report in Assam Samachar, Aarini’s tryst with chess began just six months ago when she joined the IGSF Chess Academy. What started as a casual interest quickly turned into a passion, revealing her natural grasp of the game. Observing her exceptional progress, Aarini’s coach encouraged her to take part in official tournaments—and she hasn’t looked back since.
In just half a year, Aarini has already competed in the U-7 and U-9 National Championships, as well as the Delhi State Championships in U-9, U-11, and U-13 categories, holding her own against players several years older.
Aarini also stepped into the competitive world of international chess with confidence, participating in FIDE-rated events such as the Delhi International Open (Category C), the 1st Assam University Championship, ECA International, and the 2nd New Delhi International Open.
It was during the Assam tournament that she secured her official FIDE rating, defeating a rated player—an extraordinary accomplishment for someone who hadn't even learned the game a year ago.
In just six months, Aarini has already bagged 11 trophies and multiple medals, showcasing not just talent but also consistency and focus. Her journey is especially inspiring considering her age and the level of competition she has faced.
Her achievement reflects the strength of early mentorship, parental support, and a mindset that defies limits.
Aarini is a student of Bluebells School International, New Delhi. She is the granddaughter of the late Shri Vijay Kumar Lahoty and Shrimati Indu Devi Lahoty and the daughter of Surendra and Shalu Lahoty. Her family, deeply proud of her accomplishments, has been a pillar of support throughout her journey.
More than just a personal triumph, Aarini’s achievement is an inspiration for young minds across the country. She reminds us that age is no barrier when it comes to ambition, and talent knows no bounds.
As Aarini Lahoty continues to navigate her way through black and white squares, her future in chess looks nothing short of promising. With dedication, guidance, and the same spark that brought her this far, this young prodigy from Delhi is all set to make even bigger moves on the global stage.
