India is all set to get a world-class food processing infrastructure and various schemes are being launched to help farmers double their income in the next five years. PM Narendra Modi was speaking at the inauguration event of the World Food India 2017.
Addressing the crowd, PM Modi said that farmers were prime to the efforts in food processing and that the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana to create a world-class food processing infrastructure. He added that this will leverage an investment of USD 5 billion, benefit 2 million farmers and create more than half a million jobs over the next three years.
According to PM Modi, the vast consumer base, rising income, favourable investment, climate and a government dedicated to Ease of Doing Business made India a place to be for the global food processing fraternity.
Modiji explained that food processing holds solutions to the nutrition security. He said that the coarse grains and millets grown in India have high nutritional value and can withstand adverse agro-climatic conditions. A venture based on these factors will help to raise incomes of farmers and also enhance nutrition levels.
The PM stated that although there is an increase in participation of the private sector, more investment was required in contract farming, raw material sourcing and creating agri linkages. This was a clear opportunity for global chains.
The World Food India event saw the largest gathering of investors, manufacturers, producers, food processors, policymakers, and organizations from the global food ecosystem.
