Reshma Prasad, a dedicated social activist, has shattered barriers by becoming the first transgender person to be appointed as a member of the Senate at Patna University. Her nomination, made by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, marks a significant milestone for the transgender community in India.
Reshma, hailing from Goria Toli in Patna, has been tirelessly working towards the betterment of the transgender community through her organization, 'Dostana Safar.' Her nomination not only recognizes her unwavering efforts but also aims to encourage and promote inclusivity and social progress for the transgender community in both education and social sectors.
With a PhD degree under her belt, Reshma is determined to ensure that transgender individuals do not face discrimination, harassment, or safety threats in educational institutions. She plans to advocate for policy changes that will improve the lives of transgender students and enhance literacy rates within the community. Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about various issues affecting transgender individuals.
Reshma's organization, 'Dostana Safar,' has been instrumental in organizing Pride Parades that shed light on the challenges faced by the transgender community. Recently, the Pride Parade demanded a monthly pension as a social security measure, highlighting the need to address social acceptability issues faced by transgender individuals.
In a remarkable initiative, 'Dostana Safar' also opened a restaurant called Satrangi Dostana Restro, providing employment opportunities for 20 members of the LGBTQAI community. This venture aims to empower transgender individuals economically and foster a sense of dignity and self-reliance.
Reshma Prasad's dedication and accomplishments not only pave the way for transgender individuals but also challenge societal norms and promote inclusivity. Her appointment as a member of the Senate is a testament to her perseverance and the growing recognition of the transgender community's rightful place in society.
