In a landmark decision aimed at transforming Bihar’s social and economic landscape, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has unveiled a 35% reservation for women in all government jobs across the state. This bold step is part of a broader vision to empower women and youth, strengthen governance, and pave the way for a more inclusive and skilled Bihar.
During a recent Cabinet meeting in Patna, Nitish Kumar declared that 35% of all posts in state government services would be reserved exclusively for women who are permanent residents of Bihar. This reservation will apply horizontally across all categories, levels, and departments, ensuring women’s representation in every sector. “This is not just a policy but a powerful message,” the Chief Minister said. “We want more women to step into government roles, contribute to administration, and become part of Bihar’s progress story.”
This move is expected to break long-standing barriers, giving women equal footing in the state’s workforce and governance. For generations, women in Bihar have faced cultural and social challenges that limited their participation in the formal workforce. By guaranteeing this substantial reservation, the government is offering a real chance for women to prove their power, support their families, and inspire communities.
Alongside empowering women, Nitish Kumar announced the creation of the Bihar Youth Commission, a statutory body designed to uplift young people across the state. The commission will have a chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, and seven members, all below the age of 45, reflecting the government’s commitment to youth leadership. The commission’s role will be multifaceted, advising the government on youth welfare, coordinating with departments to improve education and employment opportunities, and ensuring local youth are prioritized in private sector jobs within Bihar.
Beyond employment, the Bihar Youth Commission will address social challenges like alcohol and substance abuse, working closely with government agencies to develop preventive programs. This holistic approach signals that Bihar’s leadership recognizes the deep connection between social well-being and economic progress. This policy is not just about numbers or statistics; it’s about real people whose lives will be changed.
Bihar has long struggled with economic and social challenges, including low female workforce participation, youth unemployment, and out-migration. By instituting a 35% reservation for women and establishing a Youth Commission, the state is taking concrete steps to reverse these trends. The move is a powerful recognition that empowering women and youth is key to unlocking Bihar’s full potential. It aligns with national goals of gender equality and youth empowerment and could serve as a model for other states grappling with similar issues.
