A museum in Patna is putting Bihar on the global cultural map! The Bihar Museum has secured the ninth position among the world’s 100 best museums for 2026 and ranked first in Asia, according to the travel guide Worth a Journey.
The recognition brings international attention to the state’s rich heritage and highlights how a modern museum can make centuries of history accessible to visitors from around the world.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary welcomed the achievement, celebrating the museum’s impressive position in both the Asian and global rankings.
The museum’s ninth-place finish places it among renowned cultural institutions across the globe. Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología topped the list, followed by Madrid’s Museo del Prado in second place and Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in third.
For Bihar Museum, the recognition is a significant milestone since its opening in 2017. Anjani Kumar Singh, director general of Bihar Museum, described the achievement as a matter of pride, saying that the institution was established with the vision of meeting world-class standards. Its international recognition, he noted, reflects the ambition behind creating a museum that could present Bihar’s heritage to a wider audience.
Located on Nehru Path in Patna, Bihar Museum was developed to preserve and showcase the state’s remarkable historical and cultural legacy. Its galleries take visitors through different chapters of Indian history, including the Indus Valley civilisation, the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta and Pala periods, and the growth of Buddhism and Jainism.
One of its celebrated exhibits is the Didarganj Yakshi, an iconic ancient sculpture admired for its artistic craftsmanship. The museum also houses historical sculptures, terracotta objects, coins, manuscripts, paintings and other artefacts that offer glimpses into the lives, beliefs and artistic achievements of earlier generations.
Beyond ancient history, its galleries explore folk traditions, contemporary art and Bihar’s connections with communities living beyond the state. This combination of historical collections and modern presentation makes the museum an engaging destination for students, researchers, families and international visitors.
The museum’s contemporary architecture and expansive exhibition spaces offer a fresh approach to exploring the past. Its development began with a state government agreement with Canadian museum consultancy Lord Cultural Resources in 2011. Initial facilities opened in 2015, followed by the remaining galleries in 2017.
The annual Worth a Journey rankings cover cultural and travel destinations across categories such as museums, libraries, parks, palaces and hotels. Bihar Museum’s achievement could encourage more international visitors to discover Patna and explore the state’s archaeological treasures.
The recognition puts Bihar Museum firmly on the global cultural map, inviting more people to discover the rich history and artistic legacy of India.
