A public-private partnership project is all set to transform degraded wetlands into dense mangrove forests. A MoU has been signed between the Mangrove cell and an NGO, United Way Mumbai (UWM) to carry out the massive mangrove plantation drive.
The project will see the conversion of 20 hectares of degraded wetland into the mangrove forest. Around 20 hectares of land has been earmarked near Karave village in Nerul for the plantation drive which will begin in September.
N Vasudevan, additional principal chief conservator of forest, Mangrove Cell, Forest Department, Government of Maharashtra addressed a special forum on mangrove conservation on Tuesday at Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre in Airoli.
He said that this will be the biggest mangrove plantation drive in the region for which an NGO’s services will be taken. In the next two years, Thane creek will become greener as over one lakh saplings will be planted.
Ajay Govale, director of the NGO affirmed that it was the first time in Mumbai region that an NGO has been entrusted with such a big responsibility. UVM will look after the plantation and upkeep of the land allotted to them for a period of five years. The Mangrove Foundation is also a stakeholder in this project.
