When we think of Rajasthan, images of arid and dry regions come to our mind, However, there are many popular cities like Udaipur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and many more which attract large crowds in the tourist season who come there to explore the magnificent forts, the vibrant cultures and delicious cuisine.
Baran is a city which is located a little more than 300 km from Jaipur. The city which was once called Annapurna Nagari has three rivers passing through its topography. It is a wonderful place to visit due to its proximity to the following legendary places:
Sitabari
Sitabari, located about 45 km from Baran in Kelwara district is popular due to its association with Goddess Sita, the consort of Rama, the King of Ayodhya. Legend has it that Sita Devi lived at this place after being abandoned by her husband and it is here she gave birth to twins Luv and Kush. There are many kunds (reservoirs for collecting water) like Sita Kund, Balmiki Kund, Laxman Kund, Surya Kund, and Lav-Kush Kund and also a shrine where the locals worship the goddess.
Kanya Dah- Bilas Garh
Bilasgarh situated 45 km from Baran was once a developed city and it was ruled by the Khechi royals. Once, Emperor Aurangzeb was smitten by the Khechi princess and dispatched his men to bring her to his kingdom. The self-respecting princess decided to give up her life rather than becoming the Emperor’s object of enjoyment. The place where she annihilated herself by jumping into the fire came to be known as Kanya Dah. On learning that the princess gave up her life, Aurangzeb was infuriated and his men destroyed the entire city of Bilaspur.
Sher Garh Fort
The Sher Garh Fort located on the banks of River Parban was conquered by Shershah Suri and utilized to keep his family safe in the initial days and also to safeguard his treasure. As per the historical texts, the fort was ruled by Samanta Devdutta in 790 AD and there existed a monastery and a Buddhist temple in the fort premises.
Kapil Dhara
Kapil Dhara situated 50 km from Baran is a crowd puller owing to its famous waterfall which also has a gaumukh (holy cow’s mouth).
Sorsan Wildlife Sanctuary
Sorsan Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a large number of reptiles, birds and mammals who inhabit an area of more than 17 km containing a number of ponds and lakes. The river Parbhan flows through the western end of the sanctuary while to the eastern end lie the villages and agricultural land.
