Aurangabad, on Wednesday, has become the second city in Maharashtra state to have performed a heart transplant successfully. Mumbai is the first to when it comes to heart transplant procedure. Previously, two attempts were failed to transport a beating heart from Aurangabad to Mumbai in last year. But, Wednesday’s attempt proved to be successful.
Now, patients wouldn’t need to travel to Mumbai for a transplant.
Transplant took place at the CIIGMA hospital. To follow the procedure of a heart transplant, hospitals need clearances. Highly sophisticated equipments and infrastructure is also required. Doctors from Mumbai, Pune as well as Aurangabad were part of the team.
The procedure started around 5 in the morning and took three hours to complete. After that, a green corridor was created from Aurangabad to Pune, where a 48-year-old farmer was suffering from liver cirrhosis.
Travelling from Aurangabad to Pune usually takes more than 5 hours. But, with the help of green corridor, the same distance was travelled in little more than 3 hours. In case of an organ donation, the sooner transplant takes place, the better.
The donor was a school teacher who suffered serious injuries in a bike accident before couple of days ago. He was declared brain dead. The family of the donor was consulted before the procedure. A farmer from Ahmednagar received the heart. Kidneys were transplanted to two different patients in Aurangabad and liver was transplanted in Pune.
