The curtains have come down on the 2026 Asian Games, bringing more than two weeks of sporting drama across 43 disciplines to a close in Nagoya.
India finished fourth in the medal standings with 85 medals—21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze—as athletes produced a memorable mix of defending champions, first-time winners and landmark performances.
China topped the table with 341 medals, including 169 gold, followed by hosts Japan with 269 medals and South Korea with 150. Around 500 Indian athletes competed across the Games, with medals arriving from a wide range of disciplines.
One of the biggest highlights was India’s dominance in team sports. India completed a stunning gold-medal sweep in cricket, kabaddi and hockey.
The cricket teams successfully defended their titles, with the women beating Sri Lanka by 147 runs before the men defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in a thrilling final.
Kabaddi delivered another golden double. The women defeated Iran 37-34, while the men came from behind to beat Iran 40-34.
Hockey then completed the sweep. The women ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold by beating China 1-0, while the men defeated Malaysia 5-1 to retain their title. Both teams also secured qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Archery emerged as one of India’s strongest medal-producing sports, delivering nine medals, including five golds. Seventeen-year-old Kumkum Mohod was among the breakout stars. She became the first Indian to win individual women’s recurve gold at the Asian Games, and finished with three medals.
Boxing also produced a spectacular campaign, with India collecting three gold and three bronze medals.
Lovlina Borgohain upgraded her Hangzhou silver to gold in the women’s 75kg category, while Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal also stood atop the podium.
Beyond the medal count came several moments that will stay in Indian sporting history.
Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games golf gold, while shooter Neeru Dhanda enjoyed a remarkable campaign with two gold medals and a silver.
India also celebrated first-time Asian Games medals in disciplines including mixed martial arts, soft tennis, women’s pole vault and men’s skiff sailing.
The Games produced Olympic qualification places and gave several young athletes their first taste of continental glory.
At the closing ceremony, Neeru Dhanda carried the Indian flag as flag-bearer, capping a remarkable Games for the shooter. The ceremonial torch and flag were then handed over to representatives of Qatar, host of the next Asian Games in Doha in 2030.
India may have fallen short of its record 106-medal haul from Hangzhou 2023, but the Aichi-Nagoya Games leave behind something equally valuable—a wave of new champions, historic firsts and a growing generation ready for the next challenge.
