Currently, with only three universities having a department for disabled, the government of Odisha is working towards providing a better future to the disabled.
Odisha government has already sent a proposal to the Higher Education Department for setting up an exclusive university for the disabled. If the proposal is denied, then the authorities will agree upon setting a bigger department in an existing university.
The need for an exclusive university is important due to various reasons. According to Mr Chandra, the disability sector requires a larger number of professionals for developing learning materials, innovative newer enabling technologies and handling the psychological aspects. And only a dedicated institution would help reduce all the problems.
Setting up of a university would not only cater to the needs of the disability sector in Odisha but also help the neighbouring states in getting professionals, said Sanyas Behera, a visually challenged civil servant of the State.
