Livestock farmers in Kerala have a reason to cheer as the state government’s initiative will provide veterinary treatment for their cattle at their doorstep. This will give them the confidence to take a step further and enter commercially viable livestock ventures.
To bring veterinary services to people's doorsteps, the State Animal Husbandry agency has deployed a fleet of 29 mobile veterinary units (MVU). Kerala's livestock industry provides a significant portion of its livelihood and contributes greatly to the state's gross domestic product (GDSP).
The Union Minister for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry, Parshottam Rupala, and Minister of State for External Affairs, V. Muraleedharan, inaugurated the fleet on January 5. It would operate under the centralized toll-free number, 1962, and offer farmers services at an affordable rate.
With this initiative, farmers can now receive care for their cattle from qualified professionals. Additionally, it would enable the delivery of veterinary services to remote and distant locations. According to a New Indian Express report, the mobile unit assisted in diagnosing animals immediately and treating them efficiently.
India has one of the largest livestock sectors in the world. With other states taking up this initiative to provide mobile medical care to livestock at farmers’ doorstep the livestock industry can become one of the fastest-growing sectors within the rural economy.
