India's boxing campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 has begun on a winning note, and remarkably, Lovlina Borgohain has already secured a medal before even stepping into the ring.

The celebrated boxer from Assam received a direct entry into the women's 75kg semifinals, guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal. For Lovlina, this achievement is especially significant. Despite winning medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Asian Games and Asian Championships, the Commonwealth Games podium had remained one of the few major honours missing from her impressive résumé. That wait is now officially over.

The 28-year-old Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist is assured of her first-ever Commonwealth Games medal, making this another milestone in an already decorated journey.

How the Medal Was Secured

The women's 75kg event features only five competitors, resulting in a smaller draw. As a result, Lovlina, along with Tuvalu's Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni (TKBP) Taafaki and Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree, received first-round byes, which effectively served as the quarterfinal stage.

Their automatic progression into the semifinals means each boxer has already secured at least a bronze medal. Lovlina will now face Taafaki in the semifinal on July 31, with the winner advancing to the gold medal match. Meanwhile, England's Mary Kate Smith and Nigeria's Patricia Mbata will contest the only quarterfinal, with the winner taking on Greentree in the other semifinal.

Leading India On and Off the Ring

Lovlina's Commonwealth journey carries extra significance this year. Alongside Olympic weightlifting champion Mirabai Chanu, she has been chosen as India's flagbearer for the opening ceremony in Glasgow—an honour that reflects her stature as one of the country's finest athletes.

Her presence both inside and outside the ring continues to inspire India's next generation of sportspersons. India has traditionally enjoyed tremendous success in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, collecting 44 medals over the years. The 2026 edition has begun with plenty of optimism.

Apart from Lovlina, eight Indian boxers have received first-round byes, putting several athletes within touching distance of podium finishes. Promising names such as Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg) and Preeti Pawar (54kg) now need just one victory to guarantee themselves medals.

As India's boxing contingent prepares for the battles ahead, Lovlina Borgohain has already delivered a confidence boost for the nation. Though she is yet to throw her first punch in Glasgow, the champion has already landed one of India's earliest successes at the Games.
