Dombivli witnessed an extraordinary and proud moment on International Women’s Day when 9,111 women and students came together to perform the traditional Maharashtrian folk exercise Lezim, creating a new Guinness World Record. The historic performance took place at the Shri Sant Savalaram Sports Complex ground, turning the city into a symbol of cultural pride and unity. Participants from hundreds of schools across Thane district gathered early in the morning to be part of this remarkable event. Young girls, women, sports teachers, and Lezim players stood shoulder to shoulder, performing in perfect rhythm and coordination. The massive collective performance not only celebrated women’s strength and dedication but also highlighted the importance of preserving Maharashtra’s traditional art forms. For the residents of Dombivli and Kalyan, the achievement was more than just a record. It was a moment of pride that placed their city on the global cultural map.
The large-scale event was organised under the guidance of Maharashtra BJP state president and MLA Ravindra Chavan. It was jointly conducted by Dombivlikar Ek Sanskrutik Parivar and the Kalyan Taluka Physical Education Committee. A total of 9,111 participants performed the energetic Lezim routine simultaneously for around five and a half minutes. During the performance, the participants created coordinated formations and movements while maintaining perfect rhythm with the traditional Lezim instruments.
The performance was officially observed and verified by representatives from Guinness World Records. Swapnil Dangarekar, an official from the organisation who travelled from London to witness the event, confirmed the achievement after careful verification. The previous record was held by Sangli district in Maharashtra, where 7,338 women had performed Lezim together. The Dombivli event comfortably surpassed that number, setting a new global milestone. After verification, Dangarekar presented the official Guinness World Record certificate and medal to Suhasini Ravindra Chavan, wife of MLA Ravindra Chavan, formally recognising the historic achievement.
The event was specially organised to coincide with International Women’s Day, making it even more meaningful. The participation of thousands of women and young girls symbolised empowerment, unity, and the growing confidence of women in society. Women from different age groups, backgrounds, and schools joined the event with enthusiasm. For many young participants, it was their first time performing in such a large gathering. Yet, their discipline and coordination reflected weeks of preparation and dedication. The sight of thousands of women performing together created a powerful image of collective strength. It also reminded the audience that cultural traditions can bring communities together and inspire the next generation. Teachers and organisers played a crucial role in training the students and ensuring the success of the event. Their efforts helped transform a cultural performance into a historic global achievement.
Lezim is much more than a traditional folk activity in Maharashtra. It is a unique combination of exercise, rhythm, and cultural expression. The activity involves synchronized body movements with a small musical instrument called a Lezim, which produces rhythmic sounds when shaken. Traditionally performed during festivals, school events, and cultural celebrations, Lezim has long been a part of Maharashtra’s identity. It promotes physical fitness, discipline, teamwork, and coordination. In many schools across the state, Lezim is included in physical education programs because it combines physical activity with cultural learning. It teaches students to move in harmony with others while staying connected to their cultural roots. The Dombivli event highlighted how traditional art forms can still inspire large communities in the modern world.
Speaking on the occasion, Ravindra Chavan expressed his gratitude to all participants, teachers, and organisers who worked tirelessly to make the event possible. He emphasised that preserving cultural traditions like Lezim is a shared responsibility. According to him, such initiatives help the younger generation stay connected to Maharashtra’s rich heritage while also promoting physical fitness. Chavan also mentioned that the initiative was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to promote physical fitness and showcase India’s strength to the world. He dedicated the record to “Bharat Mata” and congratulated the students and organisers for their remarkable effort.
The atmosphere at the venue was filled with excitement and pride throughout the event. Thousands of residents gathered to witness the historic moment. The rhythmic sound of Lezim instruments, accompanied by traditional drums, created an energetic and festive environment. As the participants performed in perfect synchronisation, the crowd cheered enthusiastically. Patriotic slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” “Vande Mataram,” and “Jai Shri Ram” echoed across the ground, adding to the celebratory mood.
When the announcement of the new world record was finally made, the entire ground erupted in applause and cheers. For the people of Dombivli, it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that brought the community together. As Dombivli celebrates this proud achievement, the event stands as a reminder that tradition, unity, and determination can create history. On International Women’s Day, the city proved that when culture and community come together, even a local tradition like Lezim can shine on the world stage.
