A dream has been realized against all odds as 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar has etched his name in history as the youngest-ever player to join the IPL. He was selected by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025 auction during a thrilling two-day event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 25. This marks a significant milestone not just in his life, but in the history of Indian cricket. For the Suryavanshi family, this achievement is the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifices, and strong belief in Vaibhav’s extraordinary talent.
Vaibhav’s journey to the IPL began in the small village of Motipur, near Samastipur, Bihar. Seeing Vaibhav’s talent, his father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, made a life-changing decision that would shape his son’s future. Struggling with financial constraints but driven by the desire to see his son succeed, Sanjiv took a drastic step in 2021. He had such immense belief in Vaibhav’s potential that in order to fund his cricket dreams, he sold his land in Motipur. Though the family continues to struggle with finances, they remain hopeful that Vaibhav’s IPL selection will change their lives for the better.
Vaibhav’s cricket journey began at an age when most children are still figuring out their interests. At just eight years old, he showcased his talent in district-level trials, quickly rising through the ranks. His dedication and skill didn’t go unnoticed, and he soon caught the attention of selectors from larger platforms.
In 2021, Vaibhav became a household name when he made history by becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to score an international century. Playing for India A in a Youth Test against Australia A in Chennai, Vaibhav's remarkable feat left the cricketing world in awe. His performance reflected his mental strength and ability to excel under pressure.
Vaibhav’s big break came when he participated in trials held by Rajasthan Royals in Nagpur. It was here that he truly made his mark. Batting coach Vikram Rathour, known for challenging young talents, put Vaibhav to the test with a match scenario. In the face of intense pressure, Vaibhav responded with remarkable composure, hitting three sixes in a single over, a performance that stunned everyone present.
The performance caught the attention of the Rajasthan Royals, who quickly recognized Vaibhav’s potential. Despite his base price of just Rs 30 lakh, his skills were undeniable, and he soon found himself the subject of an intense bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. After a tense battle, Rajasthan Royals secured Vaibhav’s services for Rs 1.20 crore, a historic moment in IPL history.
His father, Sanjiv recalls the moment with immense pride: "Those three sixes and four boundaries were the turning point in his selection. Vaibhav has always been someone who thrives under pressure, and this performance proved that he could handle the demands of high-stakes cricket."
The young cricketer’s achievement has also sparked a wave of pride and inspiration in his home state of Bihar, where his story is now being shared as a symbol of hope for aspiring athletes. His success serves as a reminder that no matter how humble the beginnings, determination and passion can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
As Vaibhav prepares to step onto the field with the Rajasthan Royals, he embodies the spirit of countless young cricketers across the country who dream of making it big. His journey, marked by sacrifices and an unyielding love for the game, serves as an inspiring narrative for anyone who has ever faced adversity in the pursuit of their dreams.
