The evil custom of dowry has been steeped in our tradition since ages and in spite of all the giant strides in development, our country has not yet been able to put an end to this misogynistic practice. However, we have heard of many instances where brides have called off their marriage as the groom’s family demanded dowry. It is heartening to know that nowadays even grooms are refusing to accept dowry.
One such bridegroom is BSF constable Jitendra Singh who was offered a sum of 11 lakhs as dowry by his bride Chanchal’s father. Jitendra kindly turned down the offer and refused to accept dowry.
A Welcome Gesture
BSF constable Jitendra Singh refused to accept 11 lakhs as dowry during his wedding to Chanchal. Initially, the bride’s father was taken aback and thought that the groom’s family might not be happy with the arrangements for the wedding or he wondered whether they wanted more money. To his relief and utmost joy, he was informed that the groom and his family are against the practice of taking dowry. The groom accepted Rs 11 and coconut as a token from the bride’s parents. His kind gesture filled everyone’s heart with joy.
Education - A Blessing
The bride, Chanchal who has completed LLB and LLM is currently pursuing a Ph.D. When Jitendra came to know of her educational qualifications, he had decided that he won’t take dowry and he along with his family decided to convey this decision to the bride’s family on the wedding day itself. Jitendra opines that if Chanchal, who is preparing for Rajasthan Judicial Services (RJS) becomes a magistrate, it would be more valuable for his family than money.
Jitendra’s decision to refuse dowry is a sign of a progressive society. His action will inspire parents to educate their daughters and make them independent rather than marrying them off at a young age.
