In a heartwarming display of compassion, Muthu Lakshmi, fondly known as Amma, has become an inspiration for all with her tireless efforts to support orphaned and abandoned children as well as destitute individuals in Kurnool district. At the age of 75, Amma continues to dedicate her life to serving those in need, leaving an indelible impact on their lives.
Since the establishment of Santhi Ashram in Kachapuram village, Mantralayam mandal, in 1981, Amma has provided a safe haven for children below 14 years of age who have been abandoned or orphaned. Operating solely on the income derived from her 8-acre agricultural land, she ensures that the ashram offers a nurturing environment equipped with basic amenities.
Over the course of four decades, the ashram has sheltered and nurtured approximately 2,000 children, with an additional 1,000 benefiting from the welfare activities conducted by Amma. Currently, more than 50 children find solace under her care.
Amma goes beyond mere shelter, taking responsibility for the children's future. She oversees their marriages, ensuring their well-being even after they leave the ashram. To date, she has solemnized over 40 marriages and provided support during childbirth for girls who married with her blessings.
Amma's journey of service began when she rescued an abandoned newborn near Tungabhadra railway station during a visit to her native village in 1979. Determined to make a difference, she established the ashram and has remained steadfast in her commitment ever since.
Notably, many of the children who grew up at the ashram have successfully settled in life and are now actively involved in supporting underprivileged individuals. One such individual is Y Somanna, who, after benefiting from Amma's service activities, now assists her in running the ashram after marrying an orphan girl nurtured by Amma.
Amma's birthday on May 5 is the sole festival celebrated by the ashram, highlighting her unwavering dedication to service. Her resolute commitment to making a difference leaves no doubt that Amma's remarkable journey will continue to inspire others to embrace compassion and lend a helping hand to those in need.
