The arrival of MSC Luciana, a massive container mothership, has marked a historic moment for the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. With this vessel becoming the port’s 1,000th commercial ship, Vizhinjam has achieved a feat few ports around the world can boast of—handling 1,000 vessels in less than two years of operations.
The milestone highlights the port’s meteoric rise from a long-awaited infrastructure project to a key player in global maritime trade.
Developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) in partnership with the Kerala government, Vizhinjam is India’s first dedicated transshipment port. Located near the scenic Kovalam Beach, the port occupies a strategic position just 10 nautical miles from one of the world's busiest international shipping routes, connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East.
This location gives it a significant competitive advantage, allowing large vessels to dock without deviating far from major global trade corridors.
Vizhinjam’s first phase became operational in July 2024 and already boasts impressive infrastructure, including an 800-metre container berth and a 3,000-metre breakwater, one of the longest in the country.
What truly sets the port apart is its use of automated container-handling technology, enabling faster and more efficient cargo movement. The advanced systems are helping redefine how ports operate in India, making logistics smarter and more competitive on the global stage.
The achievement comes at a crucial time as India seeks to reduce dependence on foreign ports for transshipment and strengthen its position in international trade. For decades, a significant portion of Indian cargo was routed through overseas hubs. Vizhinjam is changing that narrative by creating a world-class facility capable of handling some of the largest container ships in operation today.
The successful handling of 1,000 commercial vessels is being viewed as a major step toward India's ambition of becoming a leading maritime and logistics powerhouse.
The port’s second and third phases are expected to be completed by 2028. Once fully developed, Vizhinjam is projected to become one of the greenest and most technologically advanced ports in the world.
With 1,000 ships already in its wake and many more on the horizon, Vizhinjam is not just transforming Kerala’s coastline—it is reshaping India’s maritime future.
