A demanding Himalayan trail, freezing temperatures and thinning air could test even the most experienced trekker. But for Pradeep Mundeja, a 100% hearing-impaired bank manager from Karnal, Haryana, these challenges became part of an extraordinary journey to Everest Base Camp.
Mundeja trekked approximately 130 km on foot to reach the iconic destination in Nepal, standing at an altitude of 5,364 metres. Completing the expedition between October 5 and 17, 2026, he marked the achievement by hoisting the flag of Punjab National Bank (PNB), where he serves as Chief Manager at its Karnal Circle Office.
His accomplishment has since drawn appreciation from his employer, turning a personal adventure into a moment of pride for the banking community.
Reaching Everest Base Camp is no ordinary trek. The route winds through rugged mountain terrain, with steep trails, cold weather and high-altitude conditions demanding considerable stamina and preparation. For Mundeja, the expedition involved navigating an unfamiliar landscape while coping with reduced oxygen levels and the physical demands of days spent walking at increasing elevations.
According to a Haryana government press release, he planned the expedition independently from India before joining a trekking group from Pune for the journey. His hearing impairment adds another dimension to the accomplishment, particularly in an environment where communication and awareness of surroundings can be important. Although details of any specific adaptations he used have not been reported, his successful completion of the trek highlights the determination behind his undertaking.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mundeja has cultivated a strong interest in fitness and endurance activities. According to The Tribune, he is a Super Randonneur cyclist and has participated in running events organised by Procam, which is associated with several major running events in India. He has also received the National Award for Outstanding Persons with Disabilities.
His experience in cycling and running reflects years of engagement with physically demanding pursuits. However, the Everest Base Camp trek presented a different challenge, requiring sustained effort across mountainous terrain and adaptation to high-altitude conditions.
Punjab National Bank celebrated Mundeja’s accomplishment on social media, praising his resilience and courage in pursuing an ambitious goal. The achievement also highlights the importance of preparation, perseverance and encouragement from others. Mundeja credited his family, colleagues, trekking team and PNB for their support, according to The Tribune.
His journey offers an inspiring reminder that hearing impairment does not define the limits of a person's ambitions. With preparation, determination and support, extraordinary goals can become achievable milestones.
